#138 Army of Darkness

Directed by Sam Raimi

Year 1992

It’s hard to view the first three Evil Dead films as a Trilogy because the tone goes from grueling terror to fanciful slapstick. This is easily the least of Raimi’s first three, but if you watch them in order this is the sweet dessert, and perhaps the most Raimi has ever been unleashed to put his style onto a film. The script is so ridiculous it asks for Bruce Campbell to give one of the all-time self-assured performances. (Big Trouble in Little China’s Jack Burton found dead in a ditch.) It’s to the film’s credit that most of Ash’s chuckleheaded dialogue is memorably funny because of Campbell’s delivery, verbally complimenting Raimi’s frantic but always clear camerawork.
