Galaxy Quest
Directed by Dean Parisot
Year 1999
Before Hot Fuzz there was Galaxy Quest, a good-humored Star Trek spoof that’s also a celebration of everything fans love about Star Trek, both on screen and behind the scenes. The casting is full of inspired choices, starting with Tim Allen doing a live-action version of Buzz Lightyear. Kirk had his Spock and Allen had Alan Rickman as a self-serious stage actor annoyed by his genre nerd celebrity. Sigourney Weaver is the actor with the most sci-fi credibility, so she plays the blond bimbo whose job on the show served no purpose. There’s Tony Shaloub and Sam Rockwell stealing scenes right before they became bigger stars, and a number of familiar faces right behind the main crew. The aliens who ask for help are led by Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars), Missi Pyle, Rainn Wilson and Patrick Breen. Justin Long plays a superfan who helps out at a critical moment, and Corbin Bleu (High School Musical) appears briefly as Young Tommy.
