#149 Village of the Damned

Directed by Wolf Rilla

Year 1960

It’s always remarkable to find a film that runs under 90-minutes and packs in more story that most films do in two hours. This isn’t even 80, but contains two equally intriguing X-Files type mysteries. It starts with a small English village whose citizens all fall into a 24-hour trance-like sleep, after which the women all learn they are pregnant. This leads into the main story of the children, and if you know anything about this film it’s probably connected to an image of them. They all look similar, with blond hair and freaky glowing eyes. They read people’s thoughts and communicate telepathically. They can force people to commit suicide, and their power is getting stronger. Direction is tight, maintaining tension for every minute. The rare case where acting legend George Sanders is merely part of the scenery. The sinister children rule. I’ve seen the poor sequel which is over 2000 films below this.
