#161 The Seventh Victim
Directed by Mark Robson
Year 1943
When you watch a David Lynch film, you probably have some idea of what you’re in for even if you can’t make sense of the details. Imagine stumbling into such an experience without any warning. From the 1940s comes a simple enough mystery about a missing sister, but the journey from Producer Val Lewton (Cat People) on the streets of New York City is often associated with Alice’s journey through the looking glass. Events almost make sense but end in a puzzling fashion, and there’s a constant sense of danger. Starting off in well-lit interiors and ending in gloomy nighttime alleys, everyone seems to be in a melancholy fog. Even the dialogue is a bit… off. At 71-minutes, there isn’t a moment that isn’t oddly fascinating.
