#160 The Thing (From Another World)
Directed by Christian Nyby
Year 1951
John Carpenter’s 1982 remake (#7) is such an astonishing achievement it has kneecapped this film. The remake is the greatest use of body horror effects, and all the 1951 version can muster is a very tall vegetable man. However, if you are a fan of Howard Hawks – and everyone should be. He has a track record across multiple genres that easily rivals the All-Time Great Directors. – then you will recognize his bravado of professionals working together and playing just as hard with lots of fast-talk that often overlaps. It’s a place where men are respected for their talents and women are just as strong, intelligent and funny. A group of experts teaming to face a difficult enemy can be just as exciting as watching an unknown enemy tear a group of similar personalities apart. Worth noting, this film has some great scary moments to brag about too.
