My first post for this project was Goodfellas and this is my 6th time talking about the golden opportunity to work on a Martin Scorsese production. Because this was made for Apple TV and because it’s 3.5 hours long, the film is already falling through the cracks of Scorsese’s filmography behind The Irishman and even Silence. This film is better paced and the story has a great sweep that almost justifies the runtime. I don’t think any film should be this long, but it never drags, which is something I can’t say about The Irishman.
There was criticism when Leonardo DiCaprio first hitched his star to Scorsese’s wagon. Some felt he wasn’t up to the task of Gangs of New York and The Departed. The Wolf of Wall Street is DiCaprio’s best performance – and by far his funniest – and I would put this 2nd, just above One Battle After Another and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It’d be interesting to see how after all these years, Scorsese gets performances from Leo and Robert De Niro that are unique for both actors. Also, what led to the interesting coda to the story, delivered on camera by Scorsese himself?
