#174 Blue Velvet

Directed by David Lynch

Year 1986

David Lynch, who never made a Horror film, has five titles on this list because nobody was better at putting their subconsciousness on film with all the danger and fear intact. Blue Velvet goes behind the white picket fence and into the grass of suburban normalcy and finds a severed ear crawling with bugs. The film presents danger in all its forms: physical, sexual, emotional and spiritual. And it makes these moments exciting and alluring. Dennis Hopper inhaling a mystery gas and Dean Stockwell as the pan-sexual Ben lip syncing Roy Orbison into an industrial work light.
