#175 The Stepford Wives (1975)
Directed by Bryan Forbes
Year 1975
The recent post on American Psycho (#173) has started an in-house conversation that continues with The Stepford Wives. With Psycho I wrote that the sophisticated satire doesn’t blend with the blunt force violence. Now I have another satire, and this one I love. It’s worth noting the film isn’t very violent, but earns its Horror/Thriller tag by being progressively creepy, building to a final section that’s downright unsettling. I rewatched the film very recently and even knowing where this is going – and even on a first watch it’s not hiding anything – there’s a darkening dread that hangs over the film. This time I also noticed how the final scene of this film is deliberately evoked in the meet cute opening of 2025’s Companion, which I’m scheduled to get to this year after Sinners and just before Weapons. (But I digress.)
