#178 Trick ’r Treat
Directed by Michael Dougherty
Year 2007
Horror has such a large and active fanbase that when a good one comes along, no matter how hard the film is to find, it will draw an audience anxious to hoist the film onto its shoulders. We all have our special finds and deep cuts, but a good Horror movie usually gets lavished with praise faster and easier than any other genre. After playing numerous festivals for two years, Warner Bros. still didn’t know how to market Trick ’r Treat, so on October 6, 2009 it was released straight-to-DVD and by the end of the month it was THE film to play on Halloween night. A collection of shorts given class by a cast that includes Brian Cox, Anna Paquin and Dylan Baker, and tied together by a mysterious kid named Sam, wearing orange footie pajamas and a burlap sack over his head. The stories combine old-school ideas with modern Horror, right as the season was growing as a commercial enterprise everyone could get in on. Everything is steeped in Halloween decorations and customs, making this a perfect annual tradition.
