#105 28 Days Later…

Directed by Danny Boyle

Year 2002

28 Days Later introduced us to fast zombies, the simple explanation being this is not really a zombie film but an apocalyptic pandemic. In a terrific opening scene, we see animal rights activists get in over their head when they break into a lab to free chimpanzees infected with a Rage Virus. The screeching animals and nervous editing create an immediate sense of unease, both of which increase when the chimps attack. This prepares you for the terrifying ride to follow.

Filming with low grade digital cameras brings a grubby atmosphere to the film, and creating the empty streets of London is something to admire. Danny Boyle has a wonderful habit of putting the camera where you don’t expect it, and that dislocation perfectly complements the mood he’s creating. Brendan Gleeson gives the film a much-needed beating heart. Amongst all the chaos, the scene where he tells his daughter that he loves her is the most memorable moment.
