Judd Apatow was a well-known writer, so it was initially assumed that those skills is what made The 40-Year-Old Virgin an instant comedy classic. That belief only lasted until the DVD was released with bonus footage and commentary. That’s when we learned how much discarded material occurs on set. The extra scenes were smart removals, and many of the film’s best moments included lots of improvisation. That put a lot of the credit away from Apatow and onto the cast, helping to launch Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd. (I don’t know why Romany Malco didn’t get as much of a boost. He’s hilarious.)
