#371 Alien 3
Directed by David Fincher
Year 1992
The Alien Franchise was built on the style strengths of the director at the helm. That’s why the first film remains peak Ridley Scott and Aliens might still be James Cameron’s best. The 3rd film was the debut of one of the most talented directors of commercials and music videos. Unproven then, now we know about David Fincher. He had a terrible script, impossible to overcome, with a very slow first half and a scattershot finale. Fincher focused on the aesthetics, and with the lighting, camera placement and set design crafted a visual masterpiece. It opened to very negative word-of-mouth, which worked towards making audiences more forgiving of it over time. It now gets by on the Fincher brand, a committed performance by Sigourney Weaver, and it contains a handful of the best moments in the series.
