#27 Audition
Directed by Takashi Miike
Year 1999
Most people’s first dip into the twisted world of Takashi Miike – and I have now seen over 30 – this is a difficult film to talk about without spoiling. The first time through, it’s largely dull until it plunges into the climax and gives the viewer a more uncomfortable and unforgettable time than they are probably ready for. Some go in knowing things are going to get rough, and the film moves even slower while patience wears thin.
On a rewatch, the twisted J-Horror shows up a lot sooner (around the bag) and stays peppered in right through to the climax that holds up to repeated viewings because you can’t believe where it goes. Also, Asami makes a sound that’s like an earworm and while it’s connected to pain, you look forward to hearing it again.
That’s why Audition ranks so high. Horror can be fun, and Horror can be fantastical, but it can also be that first ride on a brand-new coaster. You know there will be drops, loops and dark parts, but until you experience it for yourself, there’s no way to be prepared.
