Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame

Directed by Joe Russo & Anthony Russo

Year 2018/2019

The MCU is currently sputtering and wheezing like a walking corpse, but in the 2010s it had an absolute chokehold on the box office. While everyone has their personal favorite, commercially it will never be bigger than the ultimate mash-up of Infinity War, a film where our heroes continually try and fail to defeat a titan named Thanos and played by Josh Brolin in one of his best performances. It’s a film where you truly cannot separate the CGI creation from the actor’s ability to bring the character to complex life. He is the lead of Infinity War, the Marvel superheroes are the obstacles in his way. It’s a brilliant flip of the script resulting in an ending that left everyone in shock.

My favorite thing about Endgame is that we had to wait a year for it. Even once we knew the plan and could guess how Thanos would lose, we still had to wait in defeat just like the heroes. Between the two there was the disposable Ant Man & The Wasp, which takes place before The Snap, and Captain Marvel, a being so powerful it was like she was especially created to defeat Thanos. (Smartly, she plays a part in the main final battle, but our original trio of Iron Man, Captain America and Thor are in the center ring.) The result is possibly the most “you had to be there” experience of our generation. I’m glad I was.
