Blurring the line between home movie and feature film, Peter Jackson’s debut was shot on weekends over a period of four years. Jackson not only co-wrote, produced and directed, he’s the editor, director of photography, responsible for the effects and he stars in the film. The film is clearly inspired by Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead in terms of maximum creativity with limited resources to turn Horror into a Slapstick art. However, instead of copying Raimi’s style, Jackson lets his own creativity come through. The result is a lot more strange and illogical, but gleeful with the situations and the gore. What it lacks in polish, it more than makes up for with a hyperactive pace, visual flair and keeping the promise of its title on several occasions.
