#180 The Black Cat

Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer

Year 1934

The first screen pairing of Boris Karloff with Bela Lugosi is a highly-stylized combination of expressionist sets and baroque Horror. Complicated story is partly because Universal Studios cut the film drastically, but a lot of flavor is packed into the remaining 65minutes. Amusing characters, inventive direction, odd sets, the suggestion of strong violence and some of the most unique scenes in Horror movie history. One of the single greatest images to come from this period is a collection of dead women hovering in glass cases. Karloff’s character is based on British satanist Aleister Crowley.
