Black Panther

Directed by Ryan Coogler

Year 2018

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is like a cinematic Burning Man most of us attended. In the moment, it seemed like the party would never end, now it’s mostly a blur except for a few moments that make us smile with the memory. Black Panther is one of those moments. Arguably the peak of the MCU aside from the Avengers films, with over a billion dollars at the box office and seven Academy Award nominations, winning three. It raised the profile of the Cast and the Crew, including composer Ludwig Goransson and Costume Designer Ruth Carter, both nominated in 2025 for Sinners.

It also played a major part in P.A. Bootcamp. For years, the program would open with a Production Meeting and we would answer the many questions that went into creating the bank robbery that opens The Dark Knight. That was replaced with the Underground Casino at the Jagalchi Fish Market. Coogler himself released a video detailing the fight scene. We covered the build-up to that fight, the arrival of the characters and one piece of Movie Magic I always enjoyed sharing.

At the location in Busan, South Korea they dressed a real room to be the security checkpoint for the casino. Then on stage, that room was rebuilt, including some design details that would convince an audience they were looking at the same room. This was a part of the underground casino set, so the transition from exterior location to interior set would be seamless.
