#406 Black Sabbath

Directed by Mario Bava

Year 1963

I’m known for under-appreciating Mario Bava, who’s already making his 4th appearance and all with films from the 1960s. His work stands above typical Italian giallo, even Dario Argento who was influenced by Bava’s liberal use of pastel colors. He’s just as adapt with Gothic stories, like the trilogy here presented by Boris Karloff, who also stars in the middle story. The opener is perhaps Bava’s most suspenseful sequence, but it’s the final tale, “The Drop of Water” that stands out. A typical ghost story directed with incredible style and containing an image that never leaves the mind of anyone who’s seen it.
