#108 Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola

Year 1992

Any discussion of the performances is missing the point. Yes, they are wildly all over the place, and if they were more consistently good (or just more consistent) this would probably be in the Top 100, but what Coppola pulls off here, largely with in-camera movie magic creates a bold and bloody Horror film unlike any other. This was obvious from the moment I saw the first trailer, with the image of the Count’s eyes in the red sky and the throbbing score by Wojciech Kilar marching in. These are not isolated incidents, the entire film unspools like a dazzling magic show built of elaborate makeup, costumes and sets that are both old fashioned and cutting edge.
