#176 A Bucket of Blood

Directed by Roger Corman

Year 1959

Roger Corman was the guy who made all the low-budget exploitation films with the basic ingredients that teenagers wanted to see. He knew that with a simple idea, an intriguing title and a cool poster the quality of your film wouldn’t matter as much. He knew how to make films for cheap, but that didn’t mean they always looked like they were cheaply made. One of his best films, and his first appearance on this list of 6-7 titles, has minimal sets and actors, but it looks good and the camera and editing don’t skimp when it comes to crafting a scary good time. Plot beats are similar to House of Wax and Little Shop of Horrors, but this is specifically an attack on artists who want to be seen as important. Dick Miller worked for Corman dozens of times but rarely played the lead role. Like many of the strange supporting cast, he keeps you interested in him even though you’re not rooting for him.
