#40 Candyman

Directed by Bernard Rose

Year 1992

Stephen King hailed Clive Barker as the future of Horror and there was a long time when I thought that would come true. It was a time before Barker moved more into Fantasy, when he had released The Damnation Game, one of the great unadapted Horror novels. He wrote and directed Hellraiser, which remains his greatest cinematic contribution, but close behind is Candyman.

The mythology of Candyman leaves a lot unexplored, but as an urban legend there’s plenty of scares. Tony Todd has the perfect voice to be a Horror movie icon, and he comes with a liberal amount of bees. The Director of Photography is Anthony Richmond (Don’t Look Now) and the score is by Philip Glass.
