#319 Cash on Demand
Directed by Quentin Lawrence
Year 1961
“I am a rather uncommon thief.
A common one would just make off with the money,
but I can’t help interesting myself in people.”
A quick check on Letterboxd tells me that 75% of the After Dark titles qualify as Horror while a little less than half are listed as Thrillers. Most Thrillers are also listed as Horror, so I’m selective about the ones that are not. Cash on Demand sometimes gets the mention because it’s from Hammer Studios and stars Peter Cushing. The real reason why it’s here is that this hostage, bank robbery movie is very tense, with some brief but shocking bits of violence. It’s also a real gem for anyone who discovers it. The film takes place in real time – running under 80 minutes – and is a Christmas movie. Makes a nice warm-up to Die Hard, and when you compare the two you see the difference that puts Cash on Demand on this list. This is also my personal pick for the best film Hammer Studios ever made.
