An Old Dark House movie that came out 5 years before The Old Dark House. Creates the slasher formula that would also be used for And Then There Were None where strangers gather under mysterious circumstances and try to unmask a killer before they become victims. With all the bells, whistles and secret passages you want from a film like this, The Cat and the Canary is also one of the earliest films to offset a macabre tone with comedy. This aspect was exploited even further in the 1939 remake starring Bob Hope, which is more watchable because it isn’t a silent film, but this is the more classic presentation of the story.
