#418 City of the Living Dead
Directed by Lucio Fulci
Year 1980
Review of The Beyond
A priest hangs himself in a cemetery, which opens the gates of hell because… why not? Filmmaker Lucio Fulci can be laughably bad, but this one is recommendable. For once, his scattergun approach to story works because this is about a widespread pandemic, so the brief scenes with too many people help give it a sense of scale. Then there are the gore gags, which are some of his best executed. Zombie had the ridiculous fight with a shark and The Beyond had a guy lay down passively while fake spiders ate his latex face. Here, a woman literally pukes her guts out, and zombies squeeze the back of people’s heads like they’re jelly donuts. Not exactly a reason to recommend the film, but at least this stuff was technically competent.
