The 5th film from 2025 on this list is actually my 2nd favorite of that year, still behind Sinners but ahead of Weapons. While I knew the initial surprise revealed in all the marketing, I’ve been lucky enough to recommend this to people who went in cold, and it’s a bonus delight to see them think the film is going one way before you find out the truth. Even knowing that, there are a lot of surprises in this constantly twisting plot. They don’t just have a cool idea, they use every savory bit of meat on the bone. There are a couple of weak supporting performances, but the main duo is Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid. Thatcher jumps through as many tricky hoops as Inde Navarrette does in Obsession, and should’ve come out just as much a star. Quaid matches her in his best work to date.
