#115 Creepshow
Directed by George A. Romero
Year 1982
Horror movies can be educational. It’s where I first heard the word “omnibus” and learned what it meant. Also called an anthology, it’s a collection of short films with a shared theme, and it has a strong history in Horror films, with over 150 titles. Titles like Dead of Night (1945), Tales of Terror (1962) and the recent V/H/S series. I’ve already written about Kwaidan, but the most popular entry is a collaboration between writer Stephen King and director George A. Romero.
Creepshow tells five stories that visually look like they stepped right out of a comic book, with exaggerated colors and cartoon framings. They’re a little silly, scary when they need to be and in the final tale, the most creepy/crawly Horror story ever put to film. With makeup effects by Tom Savini, this is a perfect Halloween or sleepover selection. Nothing too disturbing, but plenty of images to give you nightmares. There are a lot of suggestions for gateway Horror films. This is a good pick for people looking for something more adult.
