I’ve been anticipating this moment. Because the Rank & File list is a definitive data-based list and not a personal one, there will be films on here I don’t like. Not a lot, currently there are only 24 out of the Top 1000. The highest ranking is Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s supernatural serial killer thriller. (#2 is Lost Highway, which won’t come up for awhile, and I’ll watch it again before then.)
I’ve seen Cure three times. It was first Kurosawa, seen as a double bill with his 1999 creepy tree film Charisma. I was bored by both films at the time, because Kurosawa has a subtle style where you need a few to get into what he’s doing. I’ve now seen a dozen and believe Pulse is a masterpiece. I’ve returned to Charisma, which I’d upgrade to ‘not bad’, but I still have no love for Cure.
It’s about a wave of victims all killed with an ‘X’ across their throat and the killer found nearby having no memory of the crime. This eventually connects to a mysterious man who seems to be the connection to the murders. It’s a cool but far-fetched idea, something that can easy attract interest, but after three viewings I don’t get the film’s real purpose. What is it about beyond its gimmick? This and the overwhelming acclaim is why I’ve watched the film again, but I can’t extract any enjoyment or appreciation.
