#276 Dark Water
Directed by Hideo Nakata
Year 2002
A ghost story moved out of the Haunted House and into a modern Apartment Building. The atmosphere is brimming with decay, mysterious noises, unexplained events, suspicious neighbors, plumbing, rain and leaky roofs. From the director of Ringu and based on a novel from the author of that masterpiece, while this film lacks an original story, the mood and sounds maintain the dread of a late night campfire tale. Nakata and his team have a better grasp of the tone here, able to deliver goosebumps at will and building to a climactic scare as shocking and unforgettable as the finale of Ringu.
In 2005, this was given an American remake which I think is even better, but that’s a minority opinion so it won’t be coming up anytime soon.
