#177 The Day of the Beast

Directed by Álex de la Iglesia

Year 1995

A priest has cracked a religious code and discovered the Antichrist is set to arrive on Earth in Madrid at Christmas, which is just a couple of days away. He tells his plans to another priest, which involves committing all manner of sin to hopefully sell his soul, so that he can be at the birth of the Antichrist and kill it. The two walk away confidently, only for a giant cross to fall and flatten one priest into the ground. So begins this insane comedic odyssey of vice and destruction.

Álex de la Iglesia’s filmography is wildly hit and miss, but his good films are all gems to be treasured. He has 4 titles in the Top 1000 and if you want to have a marathon of madcap violence, after this watch Common Wealth, The Last Circus and Witching & Bitching. The tone of these films are similar to Sam Raimi, especially Drag Me To Hell, the only film that might have a more scary/absurd moment involving a goat than what happens here. While a lot of directors lose control in the chaos, de la Iglesia thrives in it. Why kick a landlady down a flight of stairs when we can watch her hit every bannister on the way, only to end up hanging upside down by her stockings.
