Days of Heaven

Directed by Terrence Malick

Year 1978

I don’t enjoy watching the films of Terrence Malick, but I find them visually intriguing and would be thrilled to work on one. Sometimes film crews get to work on location in big cities and with Malick the primary location is the land itself. Working with natural light isn’t just a challenge for the Camera Department, the Set Design must also consider how structures will fit into camera compositions, creating different looks depending on the time of day. Days of Heaven is also centered around the harvesting of wheat, which meant finding a location where the crops matched the needs of the story. This is why even though the film takes place in Texas, the shoot took place in Alberta, Canada. They were expecting a large wheat harvest which helped the production considerably.
