#234 Dog Soldiers
Directed by Neil Marshall
Year 2002
There’s always a thrill in discovering a new talent. Sometimes you watch a filmmakers breakthrough and then go backwards to watch them work with less money and more limitations, with all the rough edges. I got in on the ground floor with Neil Marshall with his debut film about British soldiers fighting werewolves in the Scottish Highlands. The budget was very low, but I still remember the first big scare, well before the wolves. It got me good, and I buckled up.
What followed wass a fast, macho, surprisingly gory and action-packed ride with a couple of good twists and a cheeky humor. I knew nobody in the cast except for Kevin McKidd (Trainspotting), but it also stars Liam Cunningham and Sean Pertwee. I watched the film twice before returning it to the video store and I anxiously followed Marshall’s career waiting for his next project. Three years later he released The Descent (#70).
