Dune

Directed by Denis Villeneuve

Year 2021, 2024, 2026

My history with Dune starts with the David Lynch adaptation in 1984. I never read any of the novels and the Lynch film opens with a bit of narration so complicated I had to watch it several times just to make sense of it. Once you get into the experience, it’s more watchable as a Lynch film than a successful translation of the Dune saga, so in 2000 I watched the 290-minute TV miniseries thinking that with more time it would make more sense. It didn’t.

When Warner Bros. agreed to bankroll a final attempt to bring Dune to the screen, it was just the first film. They needed to see profit before they’d greenlight the trilogy. They put their faith in Denis Villeneuve, whose track record for quality had been remarkable up to this point. The casting department stacked the film with familiar faces (Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa), rising stars (Zendaya) and some acting heavyweights (Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgard, Oscar Isaac). For the lead role, he picked Timothée Chalamet. It was a questionable choice because Chalamet was seen as slight and soft, but it was the perfect choice because the actor was more than ready to show a different side, and is now seen as one of the biggest stars making movies.

A top-shelf crew was assembled, which has led to eight Academy Awards across the first two films, all in technical categories. In 2026 Villeneuve will complete the trilogy, only now there’s the confidence he’s working with some top bankable stars and he’s seen as a technical craftsman equal to James Cameron, David Fincher etc.
