Edward Scissorhands

Directed by Tim Burton

Year 1990

In a cruel twist of fate, I was in film school when one of my favorite directors brought his newest film into my neighborhood. I would hear the stories about houses being repainted in pastel colors and spending all day choreographing cars pulling into and out of driveways in a particular sequence. There were elaborate garden sculptures, period costumes (by Colleen Atwood) and specific hair and makeup looks. Bo Welch’s production design is pure eye candy, which is why I laughed so hard when the film cut to an establishing shot of a bank and on a building that looks nothing like a bank, it simply says “BANK”.
