#425 Evil Dead (2013)

Directed by Fede Álvarez

Year 2013

Evil Dead is one of Horror’s most creatively successful franchises, and yet when I first watched this one it was easily my least favorite. Fede Álvarez emphasizes blood, gore and brutality to such an extreme that it becomes the only reason to watch one of his films. It took me three films to get used to him and be positive towards his approach, and after Alien: Romulus (which is currently in the 700s), I went back and revisited Don’t Breathe, and liked it a lot more. Finally, this year, while preparing for Evil Dead Burn, I gave this a 2nd look and also had a more positive reaction. It is an insanely violent movie, and insanely loud, but it sticks to the promise Sam Raimi made way back when the first movie was pitched as “the ultimate experience in grueling terror.” This rewatch showed me how effective and talented Álvarez could be, even if he does turn this cabin in the woods into a carnival geek show.
