Kevin Williamson (writer of Scream) and director Robert Rodriguez serve up a teenage version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers that’s as smart as it is cool. It’s an incredible cast which includes *deep breath* Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Shawn Hatosy, Salma Hayek, Robert Patrick, Famke Janssen, Piper Laurie, Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Bebe Neuwirth, Christopher McDonald. Plus Jon Stewart being evil and Usher is in here somewhere too.
Rodriguez introduces most of the cast in a beautifully choreographed opening that defines everyone with minimal screen time, and the cast have the charisma to quickly build their parts out into a better ensemble than any Scream film. The mystery at the school uses 70s paranoia thriller techniques while the characters act like they’re in a 50s ‘daddy-o’ teen flick. Events move quickly, nicely combining scary moments within action sequences.
