#163 Faust

Directed by F.W. Murnau

Year 1926

Inspired by the traditional German folktale, Mephestio the devil wagers he can take the soul of Faust within 24 hours with the temptations of sex, love and youth. The story isn’t scary so much as a stylish Fantasy with endless amounts of bold Art Direction, clever photography and special effects. It opens with the demonic Horsemen of the Apocalypse riding through the sky. For a flight to Italy was achieved with a motorized camera on a rail running along a 115ft miniature set. The shot of Mephisto looming over the village below inspired the Chernabog demon at the end of Fantasia.
