Get Out
Directed by Jordan Peele
Year 2017
The Blumhouse Budget has become a modern urban legend. The belief is if you have a good idea for a Horror/Thriller and can make it for around 5 Million Dollars, Jason Blum will give you the creative control, including final cut. The number is just right for potentially recouping investment, and if your film is a hit, then Blumhouse becomes the place to discover new talent while earning a good deal of profit. Examples include The Purge, the Insidious films, Happy Death Day. Budgets have gone up over time. The Invisible Man was 7 million, Split came in around 9. Paranormal Activity is the most profitable because it cost as much as Blair Witch, but the most successful is Jordan Peele’s directorial debut, Get Out.
Filmed in 23 days, Get Out cost just under 5 million. It went on to make over $250 million worldwide, was nominated for 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. (It won Original Screenplay.) It launched Peele as one of the few directors’ whose name is its own intellectual property. He’s the rare director who enjoys staying in the genre, and as his ideas grow bigger and more interpretative his directing skills have risen to match them. Whatever Peele is making next, I don’t need to be sold on. Just take my money now.
