#98 Hated in the Nation

Directed by James Hawes

Year 2016

As we get to the end of the first 100 films, I am taking the next 3 entries for some unusual picks that are my hills to die on.

Black Mirror is an anthology TV work of speculative science fiction. Most episodes are the length of a TV Drama, but occasionally they are feature length and sometimes they fit firmly in the Horror/Thriller genre. This is the greatest example, a good summation of what makes Black Mirror so interesting. Mixing a sharp critique of social media with a police investigation and some of the most intense and scariest scenes of the series. I would say if you’re on the fence about watching the show, this episode will make up your mind.

The tone floats smoothly between three different genres. It starts as an unusual murder investigation, led by Kelly Macdonald, Faye Marsay (Andor) and Benedict Wong. The story involves the intense amount of hate generated by Social Media. Once the mystery comes together, the story shifts into Horror mode as we witness exactly what is happening. Then comes the masterstroke. While the detectives attempt to stop the murders, we learn more about the person behind everything and discover a grand plan that’s been right there the whole time. Like the best of sci-fi Horror, it’s scary how realistically everything comes together.
