#437 In My Skin

Directed by Marina De Van

Year 2002

A fascinating discovery from France that’s rich with meta-metaphor. It’s about a woman who injures her leg and becomes fascinated by the way her body responds to pain and injury. It sounds like a pun, but it’s accurate to describe this as a film that digs deep into its subject. We are on the journey of discovery with her. The camera stays close and the sound design is disgustingly real. If that’s not close enough, the star of the film is also the Writer/Director. Similar in many ways to Steve McQueen’s Shame, where the plot is secondary to creating a sensory experience. No film has better captured the addiction of cutting and self-mutilation, and how the people who do it find an unusual pleasure from the experience.
