Inception
Directed by Christopher Nolan
Year 2010
“So now you’ve noticed how much time Cobb spends doing things he says never to do.”
It’s a script where 90% of the dialogue is exposition. The characters are constantly asking, answering and explaining what’s going on. Even so, events are about as ambiguous as in Mulholland Drive. Whose reality are we in? Is it all a dream within a dream? Is Cillian Murphy the target or is it Leonardo DiCaprio the whole time? There’s a great deal of fun trying to these mysteries because the script supports multiple possibilities. Marion Cotillard’s madness within the logic makes sense to me as much as Elliot Page’s fascination with it.
There’s a lot of dialogue, but it’s an incredibly visual film. From the Art Direction to the Editing, it’s all very carefully thought out and that zero gravity hallway sequence knocks me out every time. Memento might still be my favorite Nolan, but the direction here is so much stronger, this is the definitive early Christopher Nolan experience.
