#337 Inside

Directed by Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury

Year 2007

Kinda like a remake of Home Alone but instead of Macaulay Culkin you have a pregnant chick and instead of Chris Columbus it’s directed by Satan. – Letterboxd Review

The brief time period of the New French Extreme produced a number of standout features, if you had the stomach for them. The masterpiece is Martyrs, the most popular (and most divisive) is High Tension (which comes up much later). Inside (À l’intérieurmay be the best way to sample this movement of slickly-directed thrills and extreme violence because it makes the decision to go light on chunky gore, but heavy on gallons and gallons of blood. It’s an dramatic choice to make a film that’s largely about two characters and paint the room with more blood than the human body contains.

That’s what you come away with from this film, so much blood that commenting on it is like commenting that a superhero film has a lot of effects. Alysson Paradis and Béatrice Dalle have the charisma to carry a necessary amount of dramatic weight, but instead of a deep plot or character development, they’re her to pour their heart into the scenery, while their pale skin increasingly is smeared in crimson.
