#152 Interview with the Vampire

Directed by Neil Jordan

Year 1994

In the Horror/Thriller landscape, Interview is like an island unto itself. It’s a Hollywood Blockbuster with big stars, usually an indication of something mainstream and safe. However, for a mainstream Hollywood Blockbuster this movie is weird. It’s also not easily comparable to other Vampire films. The central relationship is both very gay and not gay enough, with one actor throwing in all their intensity while the other broods quietly into the scenery. Both are upstaged by a child actress named Kirsten Dunst. Most of the money went into the best Gothic atmosphere on film until Guillermo del Toro came along. On top of that, personally I’ve never been a fan of director Neil Jordan, but his moody approach might’ve been just right for this slow and surprisingly absorbing tale that plays like the first part of a franchise that never got off the ground.
