#153 The Invisible Man

Directed by James Whale

Year 1933

Of the classic monsters, The Invisible Man has always been a little different. The concept lends itself to several genres aside from Horror. In truth, the only truly scary Invisible Man is recent, and I’ll be writing about the 2020 film in about a month. Many sequels and remakes are closer to Action/Adventure than Horror/Thriller, and the quality of the Special Effects are as important as the cast, writing and direction. The effects here are still pretty amazing, especially when Claude Rains first takes off his bandages and we see nothing beneath them.

Lacking a face, it helps to have someone like Rains whose vocal tones can be quite sinister. This is why Vincent Price played the character a couple of times. The terror comes from the person. Sometimes the invisibility is a curse because the body cannot handle the condition. Here, the Man goes insane because his condition gives them a feeling of invulnerability. Lacking moral accountability leads to psychosis.
