#240 Let’s Scare Jessica to Death
Directed by John D. Hancock
Year 1971
This may be our first true deep cut, a film obscure enough that if you’ve heard of it, you might have imagined you saw it on TV long ago. Its reputation has continued to grow as an odd one, much like 1974’s Messiah of Evil which would be the obvious Double Feature pick. (Coming up in the 300s). I wonder how close the end result is to the intentions of the filmmaker? Or if there even was a solid vision for the film or more a bunch of creepy and unsettling ideas? It’s a Gaslight film, but there are real supernatural happenings, except we stay in the mind of Jessica (Zohra Lampert) who starts fragile and slips into insanity. Because of this unreliable point-of-view, events remain ambiguous for a long time. That it works so well can be credited to individual scary situations that stay with you, and a grindhouse look to the film that convinces you things are going to get very unpleasant before the end.
