#441 The Killer is Loose

Directed by Budd Boetticher

Year 1956

We come to a list like this to see where our favorites end up, but we also come for recommendations worth discovering. This is one of the great film discoveries of my life, part of a Film Noir exploration I did long ago. It’s about a bank teller helping with a robbery as the inside man. During his arrest, a cop accidentally shoots the teller’s wife, and the man swears vengeance. The film plays like a compressed version of Cape Fear, with character actor Wendell Corey (Rear Window) as one of the most unusual and disturbed noir villains I’ve ever seen. The Killer is Loose runs just over 70 minutes, the film is a consistently tense and it’s just one discovery screening and a restoration away from being widely acknowledged as a suspense classic.
