#252 The Last House on the Left

Directed by Wes Craven

Year 1972

If you’re working on a project to create the definitive list of Horror/Thrillers, you’re going to run into some off-putting titles. This genre, more often than any other, walks a tightrope between entertainment and crossing the line. There’s an entire sub-genre – mostly from this time period – of rape and revenge, and the ones worth mentioning you can count on one hand. One with an equally strong reputation is I Spit on Your Grave, which is such a drop in quality it’s over 3000 titles away. This story is simple enough that it’s been remade many times, without coming close to the experience of the original, including a version from the 2000s that’s in the Bottom 10 of this list. An official remake was released in 2009. Exceedingly well-cast, it’s a better made film in every way up until the final scene. It’s currently in the 700s, the main difference being the Grindhouse tone here has helped the original House maintain its reputation as an effectively evil experience. You go to a tearjerker to cry and you come to Last House on the Left to be disturbed.
