Some filmmakers know exactly what footage they need for a scene. Penny Marshall was known for taking the time to make sure she had a scene covered. Tom Hanks said if the scripted scene took place during one inning, Marshall would want to film the entire game. It was built into the schedule that the cast would frequently play for unscripted innings to ensure that Marshall had enough footage. This was done during the Summer of 1991 in authentic costumes designed by Cynthia Flynt that were largely wool, and the actors would be playing without stunt doubles. That shot of a bruise on Renée Coleman’s thigh after sliding into a base? That’s not makeup.
