#222 The Lighthouse
Directed by Robert Eggers
Year 2019
A surreal and hypnotic trip into madness, carried along by some outstanding Oscar nominated black & white photography by Jarin Blaschke. shot on old film equipment for an authentic, dated look. Once I relaxed into it’s languid pace and repetition of routine that creates a suffocating atmosphere, this is as close to a Bela Tarr riff as I’ve seen. I enjoyed the rich atmosphere and interplay between the two actors, though Pattinson often struggles to not get dashed upon the rocks by Dafoe’s salty sea dog. The story is a combination of old sea captain folklore and Greek Mythology. I’ve seen the film twice and I still don’t clearly understand it. I like Eggers’ style, but I’m glad he went in a more mainstream direction after this experiment.
