#346 The Lost Boys

Directed by Joel Schumacher

Year 1987

I can take you back to 1987, when I was a teenager and The Lost Boys was supposed to be the coolest movie of the year. I never got into its vibe, which I thought was trying way too hard: the locations, the fashion choices, the dialogue, the comedy team of Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. My generation ate it up, but I cringed through most of it. (One of my key film nerd comparisons was discovering Near Dark, released later that same year and knowing that was a true vampire classic made by a visual artist.)

The Lost Boys has gone from being cool to be ironically cool. My generation now sees the flaws, but can’t resist the charms. I agree about saxophone player Tim Cappello, who makes a Boba Fett sized impression with even less screen time, and I always thought the soundtrack was dope. The rest is as silly as ever, and I wonder how the modern generation even looks at it. I assume they’re the ones that added the irony. Also, it’s now a hit Broadway musical with multiple Tony nominations and Awards. As a film, I find its placement ridiculously high – and it only dropped 3 places in the past 10 years.
