#293 Man Bites Dog

Directed by Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel, Benoît Poelvoorde

Year 1992

Man Bites Dog is one of the most extreme titles on the After Dark list even though it is also a Comedy. It’s a fake documentary about a serial killer, the credited directors are the director of the Doc, the Camera Operator and the murderer, and all three go by their real names. Now that reality and fiction are completely blurred it finds satire in turning true crime into entertainment, making a celebrity out of a soulless charismatic. The violence is casually unflinching and the crew spend so much time with their subject they become desensitized to his acts and form a friendship. They start out making an impartial, detached observation of a killer, and end up accomplices and willing participants.
